Freedom Programme Group

The Freedom Programme is a nationally recognised educational course designed for women who have experienced domestic abuse or controlling relationships. Developed by Pat Craven, the programme helps survivors understand the dynamics of abuse, recognise unhealthy behaviours, and begin to rebuild their confidence and sense of self.

VOICES delivers the Freedom Programme over 12 two-hour sessions during term time only

Sessions are held in a safe, supportive group setting where women can learn, share, and heal at their own pace. To make access easier for parents, we also provide a free crèche on-site for children under school age.

The programme uses powerful tools to explore how abuse works, particularly through the character of “The Dominator”, who represents the controlling and manipulative tactics used by abusers. This helps women see that the abuse was never their fault and gives them the language and understanding to identify these patterns in the future.

Shared Experiences are transformative

Alongside this, participants learn about “The Respectful Partner” — a model that shows what a healthy, equal relationship should look like. This contrast empowers women to rebuild their sense of worth and make informed decisions in future relationships.

A key strength of the programme is the peer support it fosters. Being in a group with others who have had similar experiences helps reduce feelings of isolation, builds trust, and nurtures lasting confidence.

The Freedom Programme is not therapy, but it is a transformative step toward recovery — helping survivors move from surviving to thriving, with clarity, strength, and support.
